"Cary kept notes on everything, including interesting words. Elegant words that meant something different. Words with meaning and sophistication. He wrote them down in a very fine, calligraphic longhand, in alphabetical order.

Grant listed the words at the back of one of his notebooks, along with their definitions: "avuncular," "attrition," "exacerbation," "hypertrophies," etc. continuing right through the alphabet. Gris had never seen anyone do such a thing and he remembers "asking Cary why he did it, and he told me it was because he was in love with the English language."
